First Run-in With Police

So I live near a school that's located in a secluded area so me and my friends drive back there and chill on the cover of my truck while atching the meteor shower and smoking my hookah. Well, after we were done smoking, I set it down next to my truck to let it cool off. A little while later, a cop shows up and asks us what we were up to. Here is the convo I had with Mr. Officer.

Officer: So what are you all up to tonight?
Me: Watching the meteor shower
Officer: Oh have you seen anything yet?
Me: We've seen some meteors, but not the 'showering' part yet.
Officer: Oh ok. So you all haven't been drinking or anything have you?
Me: Nope.

Meanwhile, he has his flashlight out looking around my truck. He goes around to the side that my hookah is on and does a doble take.

Officer: Oh, so what is that?
Me: It's a hookah. There's no NHT in there. You can look in the bowl if you'd like. It''s just tobacco.
Officer: *picks up the bowl and smells it* Well why in the world would you want to smoke regular tobacco outta that thing?
Me: It's flavored tobacco. It tastes really good.
Officer: Ok, well you all have a good night and stay out of trouble.

I found it humorous.

that is the response i get from everyone ... its frickin aggravating ...

it makes no sense to me that people think it is insane to smoke tobacco out of a water pipe ... what is there to get? Heh, that IS what its made for.

O well its good that you had a positive run in with the cops, now they probably will not bother you as much. Hell if you were still smoking it you should have offered it to the cop to try lol.

Unfortunately, a lot of people have this misconception. A friend of mine once told me about a time that she was smoking hookah outside at college, and some freshman came up to her and told her she was being "incredibly foolish" for smoking NHT in public; nothing she could say would convince him that it was tobacco. The kid called security on her, and when the security guard came he asked to smell it, and just said, "Mmmm...that smells good. Have a good night." Some people are just ridiculous. I've had a couple of run-ins with cops just like this. I think alot of cops, at least in my area, are becoming familiar with hookah. This probably has to do with its growing popularity. Everytime some asshole calls the cops when I'm smoking at the pool or something the cop comes, smells the smoke and the bowl, and smiles as he says goodday.

I smoke hookah a lot at public parks and so I'll have a run in with cops every now and again. A few of them ask what flavor I'm smoking, and ask why I don't go to hookah bars. One lady cop came up on me as I was loading a bowl and she said that it looked like animal guts. "Why would you wanna smoke something that looks like that?!" "Umm.... because it tastes good?" lol

My first run in with the police was on forth of July two years ago. My friends girlfriend at the time works at starbucks and we were sitting out in front of the shop smoking hookah. These guys at the table next to me were smoking cigars and came over to see what i was up to. So i told them it was called a hookah and you smoked flavored tobacco and he was all interested smelled the flavor we were packing and said i would like to try that.

Then we light some coals and the guy comes over and says some smart comment like back in our days we called those things something else. He took a couple of rips liked it. All of a sudden two cop cars come rolling up all excited as they got a call kids were smoking NHT in front of starbucks and nothing exciting ever happens in this town.

When they get out of their cars they see us. Politely talked to us a bit about the hookah and then said, " I know we cant make you leave but can you please smoke somewhere else as we dont want to continually get call backs about you guys out here." Since they were polite about it I agreed to take it somewhere else.

Since then the same cops have talked to us a couple more times. Now when they roll up and see us they just wave and drive on past us.

I've had one encounter so far...got surrounded by campus police and threatened with disorderly conduct...fought it, woulda won, but the smoking ban throughout the campus went into effect

Actually modern day hookahs were created just to smoke tobacco out of.

People in modern society are too ignorant of the past to understand how hookahs were historically used before tobacco was widely available to claim it as the reason they assume the worst. No, actually they assume the worst because they are ignorant.



And Shisha Fan actually you're not exactly right. Hookahs were created to smoke different materials, because places never had the same stuff available. It was never created intentionally to receive the effects of certain things. It was just a way to cool off whatever one might be smoking. Then when tobacco was available to the common man hookahs finally were defined for a purpose and their bastard child (B***s) were created for a specific purpose then as well.

A cop car is routinely stationed up the block from me with clear view of smoke billowing out of my window. Not a word yet... but he has worse troubles than me judging from my block.

Even in my friends shitty neighborhood with a lot of patrols they've never bothered us. Cops know what a hookah is.

Kudos I'm just jealous of you smoking watching the beautiful sky...best sessions I've had are up in Park City (perfectly clear sky's / weather), smokin in the hottub.

I never said he wasn't cool. Just he way he said that one comment annoyed me but other than that, he was a cool cat. Oh, and I forgot to mention that this was the first time I smoked it outside

I guess I'm just lucky, one of my best friends is a cop, and he smokes with me all the time, and I know all his cop buddies from poker, so I highly doubt I'll ever run into that situation.

For those of you who support me, thanks! If I do indeed get too overzealous with this modding stuff or whatever, please do let me know. There is a lot of grey area in the personal judgement thing. I have tended to ask the other mods for their opinions before making decisions, but I am trying to ween off that on small crap like this.

I've had about 7-8 run ins with the cops over smoking my hookah... all of them end with either
1) the cop being cool about it and leaving
2) the cop trying it and liking it
3) the cop being of middle eastern descent and asking if I've ever tried nakhla or al waha or some other brand
4) being told to pack it up and leave (I was smoking on property I managed and rented from) and then getting threatened with a disorderly conduct and NHT related charge...to which i threatened the cop with reporting him for unlawful entry, trespassing, age discrimination, and the cop being outside his jurisdiction...and the cop left and told me he'd send the state police back to arrest me (which never happened).

The last one is a funny story... I was smoking outside on the front porch one day at the fraternity house. A tribal police officer was driving down the street, saw me smoking on the porch, and decided that he was going to take the "NHT smoker" down! So he parks his car, jumps out, hand on his gun and tells me to get down on the ground. I laughed at him and said that he was out of line and he was out of his jurisdiction (which ended 4 blocks before my house). He said that us young fucks had no respect for the laws and that he was going to make an example out of me. I told him that if he set foot on my property I would report him for unlawful entry, trespassing, unlawful detention, age discrimination, and him being out of his jurisdiction. He started to walk toward me with his hand still on his gun, wanting to arrest me. I told him that I was smoking shisha, and he didn't believe me. I told him that I was serious about reporting him. Luckily a city cop came by (which we had a great rapport with at the time) and asked the tribal officer what he was doing. The city cop was one of my personal friends, and told the other officer that he was in the wrong and told him to leave. As the tribal cop left, he said he was going to call the state police and have them put my house under watch... The city cop then asked if I wanted to press charges against the tribal officer, to which I told him I would press charges unless I got a written apology from the tribal police officer (9/10 times that's worse for the cop than making them stand trial). I got my written apology a week later, and the tribal officer ended up resigning his job due to stress...
